This past weekend was the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in San Jose, a show full of boutique bicycle builders showing off their incredible craft. Despite the attempt at an inexplicable “no photography” policy, there are tons of photos available. Don Walker, the organizer, deserves tremendous credit for organizing the show, and probably working his tail off during the show as well, to keep it running smoothly. Every time I spotted him he had a cell phone glued to his ear. A few early pictures from the official photographer are posted on bikeforums.
It’s impossible to describe everything that was there (and probably impossible to SEE everything as well – the show was overwhelming, and I missed tons of details). The blue & cream Sycip townie bike was one of my favorite bike of the show. There were tons more inventive, ornate, technical, and plain old over-the-top bikes, but it simply had style. In retrospect, the most beautiful bikes I saw there were J.P. Weigle’s randonneurs. They define “elegant” to me, with their integrated taillight, beautiful racks, and understated lug work, with the lug points thinned to the point of blending into the tubes.
